If you've been looking at wedding venues in Maine and you're thinking, “I love Maine... but I don't necessarily want a barn wedding,” Water's Edge Estate deserves a look.
Located in Skowhegan, Maine, Water's Edge Estate has a completely different feel from many of the rustic venues you'll find throughout the state.
It's bright. It's modern. It's waterfront. And after photographing two weddings here — with another coming up — I've gotten to know some of the places around the property that photograph especially well.
But there's also something else that has consistently stood out to me about Water's Edge:
the people running it.
A Modern Maine Wedding Venue
The reception space at Water's Edge Estate is bright, white, clean and modern.
Large windows bring in natural light and give the building an open feeling that photographs beautifully.
There's also a fire pit outside, which gives guests somewhere to sit, eat, talk and enjoy the property away from the main reception space.
If you like the idea of getting married in Maine but the increasingly popular rustic barn aesthetic just isn't you, this is where I think Water's Edge really stands apart.
It gives you that Maine waterfront setting without requiring your wedding to have a rustic feel.
Okay... Can We Talk About the Bathrooms?
This is going to sound ridiculous coming from a wedding photographer.
But hear me out.
The bathrooms.
I've been to a lot of wedding venues.
When a property is converted into a venue, bathrooms can sometimes feel like the “well, we needed bathrooms, so here they are” part of the project.
Not here.
They're updated, roomy and clean, with amenities and little care items available for guests.
Is this the glamorous thing you're imagining when you're searching for your dream Maine wedding venue?
Probably not.
Will you appreciate it when you're wearing a wedding dress and have been at the venue for ten hours?
Absolutely.
It's one of those little details that tells you something about how the rest of a property is cared for.
Waterfront Wedding Photos at Water's Edge Estate
One of the obvious advantages of getting married here is access to the water.
The dock gives us a beautiful location for couple portraits and a completely different look from the rest of your wedding gallery.
But we don't necessarily have to be standing directly on the dock to take advantage of the property.
Some of my favorite areas are actually the grassy spaces near the water.
As the sun gets lower, these areas start getting beautiful open shade with light filtering through the surrounding trees.
Because of the way the property sits, I've found that roughly 45 minutes before sunset can give us especially beautiful light in these areas.
That lets us incorporate the waterfront setting without every single portrait needing to scream “LOOK, WE'RE STANDING ON A DOCK.”
We can move.
You can walk together.
You can interact.
And I can create photographs that feel natural while still showing where your wedding actually took place.
Multiple Options for Your Ceremony
Water's Edge Estate also offers multiple ceremony possibilities, giving couples more flexibility in deciding how they want their wedding to look.
The ceremony space I've photographed is spacious, beautifully landscaped and gives the wedding party plenty of room.
There's also a long wall that allows everyone to tuck away before the ceremony begins.
That's one of those venue details that doesn't sound terribly exciting until it's your wedding day and we're trying to keep you completely hidden from 100 curious guests.
Then?
It's VERY exciting.
Getting Ready at Water's Edge Estate
The getting-ready spaces here were clearly designed with actual wedding days in mind.
There are sleeping accommodations if needed, bathrooms, a large wall with a mirror, and seating where members of the wedding party can hang out while hair and makeup is happening.
For smaller-to-medium wedding parties — particularly groups of around six or fewer — the space works really nicely.
Everything you need is right there, which means you're not spending your wedding morning traveling between different locations before the ceremony.
One of My Favorite Moments Here Had Nothing to Do With the Venue
Sometimes the thing I remember most from a wedding isn't the portrait location.
It's the people.
At my most recent Water's Edge wedding, my couple chose to do a first touch and pray together before their ceremony.
They didn't see each other.
They simply held hands, had a moment together and prayed before going their separate ways to get ready for the ceremony.
They were genuinely one of the sweetest couples, and it's one of those moments that sticks with me.
It's also a great example of why having different areas around a wedding property matters.
We were able to create a private moment for them without taking away the experience of seeing one another for the first time during the ceremony.
What Really Stands Out to Me: The Owners
There's one tiny interaction that probably explains my experience with Water's Edge Estate better than anything else.
During a wedding, I realized I needed a golf cart.
So naturally, I went looking for one of the owners.
Except...
Before I could even really go find someone, here comes a golf cart.
They were already on it.
That's what I've consistently noticed here.
The owners are incredibly attentive without making you feel like you're bothering them when you need something.
As a wedding photographer, I'm usually moving quickly and working against a timeline. Having a venue team that is accessible, helpful and willing to jump in makes a difference not only for me but for the couple.
There's a welcoming feeling to working here.
You don't feel like an inconvenience.
You feel like everyone involved genuinely wants the couple's day to go well.
Who Is Water's Edge Estate Perfect For?
I think Water's Edge Estate in Skowhegan is particularly worth considering if you want a Maine wedding without the traditional barn aesthetic.
You still get the things people love about getting married in Maine — water, trees, grass, outdoor ceremony possibilities and beautiful natural scenery.
But your reception space feels much more modern.
Bright whites.
Large windows.
Clean lines.
Waterfront portraits.
It's a really nice combination for couples who want something modern while still feeling connected to the Maine landscape around them.
